On the eve of Obama announcing his running mate, I'll take this opportunity to bring up his marketing and the smart addition to his marketing mix.
This entry from the Obama campaign might be the most pleasant (and therefore, surprising) political ad I've ever seen.
No long, drawn-out zoom from a warmly lit, still photo. No ultra-slow motion footage of the candidate walking with his family. No political cliches, save for the must-have shot of the candidate.
This plays like a branding ad from a car manufacturer, big-box retailer or other blue-chip company. Quick cuts, fast-motion, and very un-political images create an appealing atmosphere. Where most political ads try to be "un-Madison Avenue," this ad gets the full treatment. The contrast is quite refreshing.
The running mate? I think it will be Kaine or Biden.
