May 10, 2008: National Train Day

May 10 was National Train Day.

Yes. National Train Day.

OK, let me say first off, I'm a train geek, so I'm really happy about this.

Put on by Amtrak, the nation's federally run passenger rail service (regular freight railroads quit running passenger service nearly 40 years ago), this day is singled out to commemorate rail travel and to highlight its benefits.

There are functions and celebrations in four major U.S. cities: New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Now, I think this is a good marketing idea - and it's boosted by the absolutely painful gas pump prices. The logo is good - and they even got All-American Good Guy Al Roker to be the spokesperson.

And I love - I mean, "LOVE." the tag line: Get Your Choo-Choo on. Whoo-hoo!
